Parks Canada innovates through co-creation with Ottomata and MySmartJourney

Digging into the Past with the Technology of Today
Archeological sites are fascinating portals to the story of humanity. But sensitive digs are often inaccessible to the public. Parks Canada wanted to change that for Archaeology Month by creating a family-friendly event at the Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux National Historic Site. This was the official governor’s residence and seat of power from 1620 to 1834. Excavation at the site reveals traces of over 200 years of diplomatic relations with the Huron-Wendat Nation. How would it be possible to explore these ancient artifacts without putting them at risk?
An Immersive, Interactive Experience
The solution to this unique problem came through the blend of technologies from two startup companies, MySmartJourney and Ottomata. Through a multimedia experience, visitors learn about the excavations and the historical significance of artifacts found. The combination of technologies created an immersive and interactive educational tool that appeals to the body, the senses, and the mind in a pleasurable discovery of the world centuries ago.
The concept is to create the archaeological dig experience, without contact. The participants interact with a virtual dig site by projection. They perform the actions of “unearthing” an object from an excavation square. A video pops up, describing the object in its historical context, followed by a QR code. When scanned, it produces a multiple-choice quiz. This is another learning moment. If the participant answers incorrectly, another try is offered, along with information about the appearance and utility of the incorrect choice. At Parks Canada St-Louis Forts and Châteaux, it’s a learning opportunity.
The experience covers three historical periods: the more you dig, the farther you go back! When it’s over, it’s time to head to the photo booth for a family picture with the artifacts discovered on their virtual tour. We at MySmartJourney are especially proud of this innovative program.
